Rowing - SA Champs March 2011:
The 2x Junior National Champion's DSG double combination of Jenienne Curr and Kayleigh Scheepers represented the Eastern Cape at the Junior National Selections, as well as the SA Senior Championships which took place at Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria last weekend. The crew came up against a strong Gauteng Junior combination on Friday, which they beat convincingly, despite being under pressure for most of the 2000 meter race. Their winning time was comparatively one of the best performances out of all the junior boys and girls crews and all but guaranteed them a place in the Junior National Team to take part in the Junior World Rowing Championships which takes place on the 2012 Olympic Games Rowing Course in Eton, Great Britain from 4 to 7 August. The crew also placed 2nd in the SA Senior Championships on Sunday, behind an Old Edwardians crew comprising of 2 senior national team members, after having lead the race for the first 750 meters. This is the first female Eastern Cape crew to gain National Selection.
38 schools from around the country competed in the annual SA Rowing Champs held at Roodeplaat Dam from Friday 4 March till Sunday 7 March. In total, 198 races were held over the 3 days, which was an amazing feat of organisation. In some events, 5 heats of 8 boats per race were held, then rowers qualified for a semi-final, and then either an A or B final. DSG had 17 girls at the champs, compared to 50 girls of some others schools.
