Sports Recognition of Excellence

Robyn Charter

Robyn Charter is Grade 10 learner at DSG in Grahamstown. She has been swimming competitively for many years but has had her game raised since the arrival of the new DSG and St Andrews Swimming Coach, Tudor Lacey.

Robyn’s first real success came at the Eastern Province Swimming Championships where she competed under the Aquabears banner. She successfully achieved a 1st place in the 100m Freestyle and 2nd place in the 50m Freestyle. This makes her the Eastern Province 10om Freestyle swim champion (in the open age group).

Robyn has successfully qualified for the Eastern Province High Schools team, the upcoming Level 3 gala to take place in East London (which is the top club swimmers U18) and the South African National Champs (open age group) to be held in Durban in April.

More recently she has competed in the schools inter-house gala where she smashed records in all the events that she took part in and thereby bringing the following times down:
200m Individual Medley (2.38,56)
200m Freestyle (2.17,30)
100m Backstroke (1.09,72)
100m Freestyle (1.00,25)
50m Butterfly (30,70)
Back (32,12)
Free (27,62)

These times above are all new records and all are better than the colours times standard as stipulated by the school.

Robyn continues to improve all the time and has thoughts of possibly one day attempting to compete at the Olympics. There is a long hard road between now and then but we wish her luck and believe that she can only build on the ‘exceptional talent’ that ex-Olympian swim coach Tudor Lacey believes that she has.

SA Schools Championships
Robyn Charter represented Eastern Province at the SA Schools Swimming Championships held in Bloemfontein in March.  She was placed 2nd in the 50m Backstroke (losing by 0.01 seconds) and placed 1st in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events
