Wednesday 13 May 2009: The Grade 12s attended a 'Conversation' between Ronnie Kassrils and Leon Wessells at the University. It was fascinating listening to these two former 'arch-enemies' talking about events leading up to the 1994 elections. Part of the Grade 12 curriculum covers this period of history, asking the questions, 'What were the crises of the 1980s?' and Was the National Party on the defensive in the 1980s and 90s?'
March 2009:
Ms Middlebrook's Grade 11 History class asked (and answered) the question: What crises did capitalism face in the 1920s and 30s? It was, of course, interesting to link these events to the current global economic crisis. At the end of the section, the learners attended a '1920s Roaring Twenties' party at the Savoy Hotel in London (DSG library). They chose and researched a character from the 1920s, dressed up as this character and explained to the party guests why each of them had been invited to this prestigious party!! One of the pre- requisites for attending the party was the ability to know how to dance the charleston! The learners enjoyed champagne from chrystal glasses (sprite and paper cups!), strawberries and cucumber sandwiches (green strips of sweets and marie biscuits!).
The Grade 9s have been studying human rights abuses in History. This covers both Nazi Germany and apartheid South Africa. We have watched some harrowing footage which has sparked mature discussion about human behaviour in our present societies.
